ABOUT THE AUTHOR


MICHAEL CALLAN is a thirty-seven year veteran of the Fire Service and a former Captain with the Wallingford, Connecticut Fire Department. Mr. Callan has trained emergency responders in fire suppression and hazardous materials operations for over 30 years throughout the United States and Canada. In 2001, he was selected as the California Hazardous Materials Instructor of the Year. Michael Callan is one of the lead instructors / mentors in the Virtual Terrorism Response Academy (VTRA) developed by Dartmouth University's Interactive Media Lab. The VTRA is a reusable advanced distance learning environment that supports the development and dissemination of terrorism response course- ware.


Mr. Callan has authored national firefighting training textbooks including Street Smart Haz Mat Response and Responding to Utility Emergencies, used extensively by the Utilities Industries for training firefighters and published by Red Hat Publishing. He is the developer of the widely adopted Propane Emergencies Training Facilitator’s Guide and PowerPoint programs used by the U.S. Fire Service. He is co-author of Hazardous Materials Exposures—Emergency Response and Patient Care published by Brady and Prentice Hall. He is the lead instructor on the video train- ing series by Emergency Resources Inc.—”Surviving the Hazardous Materials Incident”. He is currently developing interactive training modules for delivering the Department of Transportation / Office of Pipeline Safety’s Pipeline Emergencies Training that is distributed nationally to every state fire service training organization by the National Association of State Fire Marshals.


Mr. Callan has keynoted and conducted over 1000 national training conferences, was selected by EPA as a member of the Presidential Review Committee of the Clean Air Act 1990, appoint- ed to the Chemical Accident Prevention Committee, assisted the Chemical Accident Investigation Team, and was a member of the US Delegation that traveled to Canada, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia for emergency response preparedness, prevention and response reviews and seminars. He was also selected from 7000 municipal and private sector instruc- tors, and received the International Society of Fire Instructors' George D. Post Instructor of the Year award at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Cincinnati in 1989.


Callan and Company conducts safety, chemical and emergency response training around the country for Industrial and Municipal Haz-Mat Teams. His client list includes Sprint, Pacific Gas and Electric, Duke Energy, ComEd, Excel Energy, SCANA, Northeast Utilities, Louisiana Pacific, General Motors, Phillips Petroleum, Morton International, The Stanley Works, Southern New England Telephone, Ensign-Bickford Industries, Bristol Meyers, Merck, ATF, Kennedy Space Center, Dupont and IBM.
