In 1904 Albert Santos-Dumont asked his friend, the watchmaker Louis Cartier, to make a watch for him that was suitable to use while flying.
Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe, based in Geneva, had already invented wristwatches in the 1860s, but they had been developed as pieces of jewellery for women.
