skies over Britain between July and October 1940, Christopher Ward has been commissioned by the RAF to honour the bravery of its pilots with a specially designed watch. The C5 Battle of Britain (70)
6B/159 Automatic reflects the original styling of the Air Ministry’s military issue pilots’ watch – reference number 6B/159. It displays The King’s Crown and the laurel wreathed RAF Crest of the period. The watch, in a limited edition of only 1940 pieces worldwide, can be proudly worn by RAF servicemen and women, as well as by watch enthusiasts. Even its owner’s handbook is based on the original 1940s logbooks that pilots used.

Squadron Leader Stuart Balfour, Directorate of Defence PR (RAF) says of the commemorative C5: “With ties between the brand and the RAF already well established at individual Squadron level, Christopher Ward of London was the obvious choice to create a timepiece to commemorate this very important anniversary.” Chris Ward adds: “We are proud
and delighted to be working with the RAF in helping to commemorate a British battle that determined the destiny of our nation.” The watch is powered by an
ETA 2824-2 automatic movement and features, developed with the RAF, include hour and minute hands in the shape of Spitfire propeller blades – the aircraft that was critical to the battle.
Christopher Ward and the RAF Benevolent Fund
The RAF Benevolent Fund is among the leading charities working with RAF and former RAF personnel, providing financial, practical and emotional support to service people, their partners and their dependents. As a British business, Christopher Ward is proud to be associated with the RAF and its commemoration of the Battle of Britain. As part of its commitment, Christopher Ward is donating 5% of the retail price of every C5 Battle of Britain (70) 6B/159 and every C70 RAF Ad Astra to the RAFBF. Christopher Ward
has been working with the RAF for the past year on a number of projects, and is an official watch licensee for RAF brand watches.
In addition to the C5 Battle of Britain and Ad Astra watches, Christopher Ward has created bespoke watches for six RAF squadrons, featuring the relevant badge and motto of each one. Like all Christopher Ward watches, the RAF series combines fine English watch design with Swiss watchmaking refinement. Christopher Ward is also in talks with a number of other squadrons on creating their own watches. Although the bespoke watches are made in small numbers – some RAF squadrons have fewer than 200 people in them – Christopher Ward’s accessible prices ensure personnel across the squadrons, including ground crew and support staff, can own a squadron watch.
