By Kitty Foth-Regner

RE YOU SURE THAT CHRISTIANITY IS TRUE?” I asked my church-going girlfriend Sarah. I was a few weeks into

my search for absolute truth, and I’d asked her to lunch at a swanky restaurant to learn how to become a woman of rock-solid faith. “Of course,” she said. “Positive.” Just what I’d hoped to hear! “Why?” I asked. “What’s your proof?”

“Proof?” She looked at me like I was crazy. “I really don’t know. I just believe.”

“You, too,” I said sadly. I busied myself with a rye roll, wondering what was wrong with me, why I couldn’t “just believe.”

Helping the rational skeptic find the way to faith in God INTELLECTUAL BARRIERS

Like many supremely rational Baby Boomers, I’d spent a lifetime erecting intellectual barriers to belief in the supernatural. But suddenly, in May of 2000, I lost my beloved Christian mother to cancer; fi nding the truth became imperative.

I wanted to embrace an afterlife, but I’d been a feminist atheist for more than a quarter century. A simple invitation to believe wouldn’t cut it. Do you ever fi nd yourself witnessing to people like this? If so, perhaps my experience will help you point them in the right direction.

A LONELY JOURNEY

Left to our own devices, reason-based seekers like I was too often wander around fruitlessly. We ask pro- fessing Christians for guidance, but most just shrug and advise us to take it on faith.

As a result, our journeys can be tortuous. I person- ally spent a shocking amount of time spinning my wheels. It was only through God’s grace that I kept going, fi nally arriving at the only destination worth reaching—total trust in the same Lord Jesus Christ my mother had claimed as her Savior.

WE’RE CALLED TO HELP Helping such seekers is not optional. As the apostle

Peter said, “Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15b).

Fortunately, the Lord has raised up an army of apologists to help us make the case that reason leads straight to the cross.

It’s not easy. There are no guarantees that we’ll be heard. And salvation is surely of the Lord, not us (Jonah 2:9). But sincere seekers will gladly travel the evidence-strewn paths we set before them. Here are some idea-starters.

STEP #1: PRAY

Praying is obviously the most important step. Only the Lord knows exactly what each seeker needs to em- brace in order to repent and believe. And only He can soften hearts and prompt us to say the right things.

STEP #2: HELP FRAME THE QUESTIONS Seekers often don’t know what questions to ask.

That was certainly one of my major problems as a seeker. I didn’t realize until my search was over that
