“This work is shaping the local culture and how the Church is viewed,” says Mark Campbell, executive director for MOJ. “They see the church as a healing organization that’s solving community problems. They really do see the church at large in a very different way.”


start somewhere


“You look at what MOJ is doing and you might get overwhelmed,” says Campbell. “But you don’t have to create a large edifice to make a difference. You just have to start somewhere. Start prayerfully. And start with a heart for people.”


When Newkirk announced eight years ago that the church was starting a medical ministry, a handful of doctors, nurses, other medical professionals and lay volunteers stepped forward to sign up. Since then, the volunteer list has grown to nearly two dozen doctors, seven dentists, four dental

hygienists, one oral surgeon, several nurses, recovery counselors, and a fleet of lay volunteers. “If doctors donate their time, often they can make convincing cases for other doctors and hospitals to donate their services as well,” says Nelson. The clinic is so respected in the community, that surgeries, exams, scans, other procedures and even hospital stays often are donated for MOJ patients who otherwise couldn’t pay.

and spirit are impossible to separate, so when you care for one part of a person, you care for the others as well. “This is why MOJ’s focus isn’t just on the physical health of a person,” says Newkirk. “Our focus from the beginning, even for a toothache, is to get at the root cause of any ailment and care for the whole person.”
