Cast Iron Sponsored Research: Aging Effect on Gray Cast Iron Machinability: Importance of Microstructure
Von Richards, Jared Teague and Simon Lekakh, Missouri Univ. of Science and Technology, Rolla, Mo. Previous research has concluded
that age strengthening in gray cast iron from nano-nitride precipitation can improve the machinability of the iron. In the presented research the opposite behavior is shown, where age strengthening reduced the ma- chinability of gray iron, based on tool forces. The conclusion is that gray iron decreases in machinability after aging when free ferrite is not present.

in a cold climate environment, the ductile iron castings have to meet low temperature impact properties, as well as static tensile, yield and elongation minimums. This presentation compares the characteristics of ductile iron with the required impact strength with those ductile iron types that almost satisfy the impact criterion.
