Conversion Saves Railroad Company Money, Machining

Cast Component: Turntable base used in equipment for railroad track maintenance.

Material: A206 aluminum with T7 heat treatment.

Process: Nobake casting.

Casting Supplier: AFW Foundry, Lannon, Wis.

Customer: Nordco, Oak Creek, Wis.

• The cast turntable base is used in con- junction with a hydraulic cylinder as a single support capable of lifting a 24,000-lb. machine.

• The base was converted from a 6061- T651 aluminum fabrication with a steel sleeve inserted in the socket portion and mechanically fastened to prevent degradation of the machined bore during the lifting and rotating procedure. In the redesign, the steel sleeve was cast into the socket bore, removing the need for mechanical fastening, and the lift handles and associated machining operations were eliminated.

• The fi nished casting resulted in a $500 per piece savings over the previous fabrication.
