The Institute for Certified Administrative Professionals (ICAP) offers the internationally recognized ratings of
Certified Professional Secretary® (CPS®) and Certified Administrative Professional® (CAP®) to all office professionals in South Africa. These ratings are the achievement of the internationally recognized standard of proficiency as a professional secretary office professional. They are self-study, distance learning programmes and are ideally suited to office professionals who
are wishing to develop themselves further in their careers. The programme covers Office Systems and Technology, Office Administration, Management and Advanced Organisational Management.
Although the programmes are self-study, ICAP offers a 5-day pre examination workshop prior to each exam in May and November. ICAP also offer in house workshops where five or more delegates register to do the programme.
ICAP work hand in hand with large corporations who recognize the important role that the secretary / PA plays in their company and who have registered their secretaries and PAs on the programme to raise the level of the profession in their company. ICAP assists companies to establish a career framework
for secretaries and PAs within their corporation.
ICAP is the authorized, licensed, exclusive agent for the International Association of Administrative Professionals® in administering the Certified Professional Secretary® (CPS®) and Certified Administrative Professional® (CAP®) programmes in Southern Africa.

Office professionals such as Secretaries, Personal Assistants and Administrators can no longer be labelled as the person who only answers calls, makes the tea and types documents.
Many office professionals today work as the partner of the executive or manager and provide valuable input and assistance to the daily running of the company.
Because of added responsibilities to the duties of an office professional,
there is
a need for continuous education in order to keep up to date in the workplace. The Institute for Certified
Administrative
Professionals (ICAP) offer administrative professionals 2 international professional qualifications which encourage the candidates to empower themselves by continuous learning.
The Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) and Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) certifications are perfect for those who want to enhance their careers and empower themselves in the workplace. ICAP is the exclusive agent for the IAAP in administering the CPS and CAP programmes in South Africa.
The International Association of
Administrative Professionals’ (IAAP) has a mission to “enhance the success of career-minded administrative professionals by providing opportunities for growth through education, community building and leadership development.”
In South Africa such opportunities are
presented to administrative professionals, such as conferences,
seminars, award
ceremonies and networking events. Recently, conferences and seminars aimed
at empowering the office professional staff are being downloaded into email inboxes constantly.
When booking for a conference/seminar you must ensure that the company you are booking through is legitimate and that the content of the conference/seminar is relevant to your office environment and up- to-date with current technology and that you will learn something new!
Networking has become a vital part of the office professional’s careers; it is at networking events that office professionals are able to learn from each other, keep up to date and learn about other conferences and seminars that are of worth attending.
There are many institutions which offer a networking service. ICAP hold a networking session each month – for 2 hours in the evening. Each session has a 1 hour talk and is followed by networking with snacks and drinks.
Award ceremonies are perfect for networking with people who are truly interested in their careers:
there are
two such award ceremonies for office professionals; these are the PA of the Year award and the National Office Professional of the Year Award.
PA of the Year 2009 was been awarded to Lynn Kruger CAP, PA to MD of Concor Holdings. The National Office Professional of the Year 2009 was awarded to: Pamela Khumalo Executive
Assistant to the
Divisional General Manager of Automotive at Toyota Tsusho Africa.
Go out there learn something new and make 2010 your year to do something different – GO empower yourself!
