Question: Paula Dwyer

Everyone else seems to have goals! I struggle with this – either I don’t have one or if I set one I don’t follow through. Help!

Answer: Did you know?

Those who achieve success have developed the habit of doing what others will not and in the process they become and achieve what most others do not.

It has been said, ‘success is the progressive realisation of a worthwhile dream or goal’.

In goal setting patience and persistence is the key. In attempting to achieve your worthwhile dream or goal, often something will happen to knock you right off course.

At this point, will you choose to remain off course and call it quits? Many would. To them the goal is not worth the struggle.

Why are certain goals ludicrous to some while others would risk their lives to achieve them?

To the few significance and accomplishment are of far greater importance than comfort. Significance means they make a substantial difference to the lives of others and when they leave this world they have left it a better place as a result of their contribution. Think of Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa and Ghandi.

Most goals are not as demanding as theirs. Yet,

in the process they and

others like them rose above everyone else always to be remembered.

The bigger the goal and the more struggle involved, the more personal growth

occurs. The process often yields positive spin-offs such as better relationships with others, and better self- and spiritual understanding.

If you have a huge goal, it is better to be long sighted so you will not easily be knocked off course. Imagine trying to do a large jigsaw puzzle, not getting it right the first day, then refusing to try again and telling yourself you’ve failed. Though it is important to have a challenging yet realistic deadline, you haven’t failed until you give up trying. Every step gets you closer to the goal, even if by trial and error.

So when you encounter those detours,

appreciate the process,

picture the destination, and think of them as steps in the right direction. And remain patient and persistent.
