Weigh up the savings Singleton Birch achieves big savings with Volvo and RDS
Singleton Birch is the UK’s leading independent supplier of lime products and can produce up to 6000t per day from the rock face at its site near Barnetby in North Lincolnshire from which a varied product range is then exported all over the world. To help keep up this high work rate, Singleton Birch recently invested in a new Volvo L350F with 12.7t capacity. This is the largest wheeled loader in the Volvo range and the first to be delivered in the UK. So far results have been impressive with significant fuel savings on the loader of up to 100 litres per day. To further help manage operations at the rock face, Singleton Birch also chose a Loadmaster 9000i on-board weighing scale from RDS Technology. Supplied by regional distributor, RDS North Eastern, the 9000i can be trade-approved for the sale of goods to MID Class Y(b) and OIML Class R51 & R76 standards. Singleton Birch are currently using five RDS weighing systems on site to accumulate the tonnage each loader is achieving, building up productivity data to find the optimum point at which to move crushers closer to the quarry face. This allows operational waste to be minimised and loading efficiency to be optimised. So far, Mark Sacker, quarry manager, is pleased with the performance of the RDS Loadmaster on the quarry’s loaders. “The performance of the new loader coupled with the accuracy we see from the weighing system, mean we can be sure that operations at Singleton Birch are becoming more efficient and economical.”
Although currently installed with in-cab printers, the Loadmaster offers an integral SD-card reader that Singleton Birch are starting to use for saving load data instead of printing. From the SD card, the data can be easily transferred to a central computer where operational efficiency is calculated without the need for numerous print outs of loading activity. RDS North Eastern has supplied Singleton Birch with on-board weighing systems for over 20 years and Mike Pickering, Garage Supervisor, confirms that, “Over these two decades of use, I cannot recall one system failing and if it does we know we can rely on the service of RDS North Eastern to respond quickly and
effectively to resolve any issues.” With the performance of the Volvo loader and RDS on-board weighing system already helping achieve big savings after only a few months, the continued use of such technology will ensure Singleton Birch realise their objective of continued site optimisation and efficiency.
