Sacks of innovation Ventisack is a new generation of cement sack from

So many areas of cement production continue to evolve with the advent of new and increasingly innovative technology. The challenge of actually packaging the finished product is by no means an exception thanks to the efforts of businesses like
bpi.industrial. This manufacturer, which is part of British Polythene Industries (BPI) plc - Europe’s largest producer of polythene films, bags and sacks – specialises in the provision of packaging for heavy duty applications. It is already a leading supplier to many of the biggest names in the cement industry but its recently introduced Ventisack product looks set to take that success to even greater levels. “Ventisack was created purposely to meet the needs of the cement industry,” explains Roy McAdoo, commercial director at

It sets out to address two important packaging challenges that are specific to the sector. “Firstly, that cement is packed on high speed lines where air needs to be able to vent from the packaging quickly. And secondly, that cement is often stored outside at the mercy of the elements and at risk from water ingression. “Ventisack tackles both of these challenges admirably. It’s a next generation high strength and tear resistant co-extruded FFS film that can be used to create sacks with a revolutionary back seam. This unique seam allows air to vent but still has the ability to keep the weather, and water in particular, out.” But this impressive, fit for purpose nature is just the start. It
seems there are also other major benefits to Ventisack that are helping to drive its success and growing industry popularity.

“Modern cement packaging is no longer just about function,” says Roy McAdoo, “it’s also about form. We live in brand conscious, consumer aware times and as such, packaging needs to offer strong aesthetics and an immediate visual impact. This is especially true when packaging products sold in competitive sales environments like merchants’ yards.” For this very reason,
bpi.industrial has gone to great lengths to ensure Ventisack offers exceptional design possibilities and print qualities. It can actually be printed in up to four print
coverage around the entire film tube. This means no wasted areas of white space along the sidewalls and no lost opportunities to promote your brand or your marketing message. It’s also natural to expect any new product to be a greener product – and again Ventisack doesn’t disappoint. It’s made from 100% recyclable polythene meaning the resultant sacks are far easier to recycle than those made from paper and a liner. In addition,
bpi.industrial’s extensive expertise and use of the latest extrusion technology allows it to downgauge the film wherever suitable. The use of such downgauged film means the end user ultimately has less sack by weight to recycle to begin with.
These wide ranging benefits are also available to a wide range of people. Recognising the different and diverse requirements of the cement industry, Ventisack film is offered in a variety of sizes and thicknesses allowing sacks anywhere from 300 to 650mm in diameter, 400 to 1200mm in length and 90-200 microns thick to be created.
The venting characteristics can also be tailored to specific customer needs whilst added value features like embossing can be included to provide anti-slip properties if desired. “We’re proud of Ventisack because its development has made full use of the considerable technical expertise and manufacturing technology available across BPI today” adds Roy McAdoo. “It’s a new solution to an age old problem.
