Building to meet customer requirements

SNS Europe asks Thomas Pavel, LSI’s Channel Sales Director, EMEA, about the recent launch of the CTS2600 family of configurable storage components, in particular how the Channel has helped to shape the launch, and how it will benefit from the launch.

SNS:What have been the drivers/customer pain points that are behind the launch of the LSI CTS2600 family of configurable storage components?

TP: The feedback we were receiving from our Channel partners indicated that they wanted the capability to build storage systems to better meet the exact requirements demanded by their customers.

SNS: Put another way, what does the new family of components allow the Channel to offer its customers over previous LSI technology?

TP: The modular design of the LSI™ CTS2600 enables lower acquisition and expansion costs while maintaining maximum flexibility, which in turn creates an affordable entry point; all without sacrificing future scalability.

And when

requirements change the pay as you grow scalability keeps expansion costs down through optimal ‘just in time’ purchasing.

This new offering gives whitebox channel partners multiple configurations including next generation 6Gb/s SAS disk drive

back-end technology, next generation iSCSI, 6Gb/s SAS and/or 8Gb/s Fibre Channel host connection front end

technology. By combining the flexibility to build to the exact specification that customers require, with the increased performance and reliability offered by LSI 6Gb/s SAS technology, the LSI CTS2600 delivers comparable functionality to enterprise storage systems while maintaining the lower price point that entry and midrange customers expect. Furthermore, the value of stocking disaggregated components is more manageable and affordable for the Systems Builder than full systems.

SNS: Can you explain a little bit behind the thinking of offering SAS, iSCSI and FC host connection in the one system?

TP: This provides consolidation flexibility and allows integrators to use the interface that best suits their particular server connection and I/O type, whether that be SAS, iSCSI or Fibre Channel, offering configuration options for a variety of applications from SAS low-cost rack-integrated solutions to single-room data centres to iSCSI or Fibre Channel environments.

SNS: In what form factor(s) is the system available?

TP: The LSI CTS2600-12

chassis is a 2U 6Gb/s SAS drive enclosure that supports up to 12, 3.5” SAS drives while the LSI CTS2600-24 chassis supports 24, 2.5” SAS drives.

SNS: and will SSDs be added as an option?

TP: Yes, the CTS2600 can intermix drives including high- performance and capacity- optimised SAS drives as well as SSD for complete flexibility.

SNS: What performance levels does the LSI 2600 platform offer?

TP: The LSI CTS2600 combines proven LSI controller technology with leading host interface connectivity to deliver bandwidth of up to 4,000MB/s on sustained reads and over 40,000 IOs per second on random disk reads. The system’s balanced and sustainable performance allows it to reliably support both random access and sequential access intensive workloads.

SNS: And what about capacity/ maximum system size?

TP: The CTS2600 family supports up to 96 devices, with capacities ranging from 146GB to 2TB each

SNS: Can you talk through the various SAS drive options:
