How to share, manage and preserve valuable data

The media and broadcast industry is one of the world’s largest generators of unstructured data. In terms of the disciplines needed for sharing, managing and preserving this valuable information, it has the same issues as many other data intensive businesses. Alistair Washbourn (left) fromQuantum and Declan Wood (right) fromMedia Manor give their views.

The challenge is to ensure that all data is on the right platform for its requirements and that it is stored securely and safely in more than one place – but that there is no unnecessary duplication of the information.

The key to

managing and protecting enterprise data is an efficient NAS or SAN together with high performance file and storage manager system software. This becomes a central storage pool delivering sustained and predictable throughput to multiple platforms and applications.

“The benefit of NAS or SAN coupled with an intelligent file and storage manager is that all the data is classified

and stored on a ‘fit for purpose’ device or storage tier. This supports fast on-line application data on high performance disks, allows logging and short term storage of work in progress on mid range disk, and long term archive on nearline tape” stated Alistair Washbourn, Quantum’s EMEA Software Marketing Manager. “When buying primary storage most organisations look at data protection solutions at the same time. A good enterprise file and storage management solution should incorporate protection, deduplication, replication and archiving as part of the package.”

A NAS or SAN file and storage management system working

with standard hardware creates huge potential to cut costs and make efficiency savings while speeding up processes and improving collaboration between companies, departments and technology.

Declan Wood, Managing Director of broadcast and media consultancy Media Manor said “Real financial and production turnaround benefits can be achieved by implementing basic IT technology as part of your workflow. You don’t have to dive headlong into a full transformation programme to make savings; benefits can be made as long as the implementation is optimised for your industry and workflow.
