ALBUM REVIEW

K-X-P ‘K-X-P’ Smalltown Supersound

Do you brood? Are you partial to neo-Krautrock? Do you sincerely believe that drone and funk can coexist peacefully? Have you ever wondered what music vampires listen to when they have sex? If you answered ‘yes’ to one or more of those questions, then K-X-P’s self-titled debut may be the album for you.

The work of a trio of (possibly) sun-deprived Finns including Timo Kaukolampi, producer for Annie, album highlight ’18 Hours (Of Love)’, suggests something wonderfully carnal with its dubby glam

stomp, ‘Pockets’ pours on an extra helping of lo-fi scuzz and ‘New World’ sounds like the soundtrack to Super Mario re-written by the devil (in a good sense, obviously). ‘Elephant Man’, on the other hand, fi nds Joseph Merrick having a particularly good day, while ‘Aibal Dub’ conjures up grainy black and white footage of Nosferatu.

Despite this closing mental imagery, you don’t have to be a vampire to appreciate the nocturnal world of K-X-P.

DEATH ON THE BALCONY DJWEEKLY PODCAST #1

Originally hailing from the unlikely bright lights of Blackpool, Leeds-based Death On The Balcony have struck house gold as half of label Magic Bag, pulling from it releases by dOP, Simon Baker and Jamie Jones, as well as fellow label residents Youandme and People Get Real. Latest single ‘Clean Air/Joplin’ draws on

Woodstock’s legacy, the later track’s Janis Joplin sampling vibes remixed by Soul Clap to amazing effect. They dropped us almost two hours of languid disco, chopped funk and lush atmospheric tech to kick our podcast series off in fine style.
