This attitude also extends into Gareths compositions; he’s clearly not afraid to challenge the odd compositional law in his images, often cutting off feet, arms and even eyebrows to create his images. “I’m a great believer that it’s all about the angles. A lot of photographers are afraid to put themselves in certain positions to get good shots, but I’m not.”

“Landscape photographers are the true photographers of this world,” he states. “Get a good landscape photograph and the rule of thirds is laid out in front of you. To me, those rules are made to be broken and it’s important to get something that’s different; an angle that no one else is prepared to do. I can’t really put a science on my compositions. To me, it’s more about a feeling about what looks right.”

When it comes to lighting Gareth is grounded in terms of his equipment choice. “I need something that’s portable and really strong because I’m a real nightmare at dropping things, hence why I chose Bowens over some other manufacturers. Bowens kit is durable, simple to use and something that will do the job all in one package.”

“I currently use Gemini 750Pro heads which do a really good job, but my favourite bit of kit would definitely be the 40° Sunlite reflector. It gives a wide area of light and, because it’s painted white, it delivers a really clean, crisp light that’s even and helps the subject stand out from the background.”
