collection of 50,000 ‘Girls I never knew’ images shot over a full year. “I pared that total down to about 150 and sent off covering letters and emails to publishers but in truth I didn’t really understand the book world. I should have spent time trying to meet them face to face. Some of the work has now been published as an anthology in some parts of Europe but the good thing is that the project has resulted in commercial commissions from clients who appreciate where I am coming


from.” But just where is Adrian Samson coming from? In his early twenties he travelled extensively in the Middle East, taking photographs as a hobby. He found work as a waiter but set his heart on becoming a portrait photographer on a cruise liner. “That wasn’t easy” he remembers: “I tried repeatedly but was turned down at every attempt. Finally, I did get a break with a cruise company and ended up taking around 3,000
