Additional effects:
Don't restrict yourself to using the second light only as a fill light! Additional lights can be used for a variety of effects, from side lights, rim lights to hair lights, which can be utilised to add more drama to your image or just subtle effects to help lift the subject from the background. In this example, I've used a Bowens silver reflector disc to lift the shadows and a second Bowens Gemini 500PRO on a boom arm, fitted with a standard 60x80 softbox to act as a hair light and create a subtle reflection on the hair. You can see how adding light sources and reflectors one at a time can really help you make the most of your portraits and develop your lighting expertise at the same time.

Tip:
Remember when using fill lights to keep your key light / fill light ratio at about 2:1 or 3:2. If both the key and fill light are metered to the same power, then the image will appear flat, otherwise known as 'flat lighting'. This makes the image look very unflattering. It's important to bear in mind that the key to a successful image is utilising the shadows as much as the light.
Equipment used:
• Bowens 500Pro/500Pro two head kit • Additional Bowens 60x80cm Softbox • Bowens gold/silver reflector disc • Bowens compact boom arm
