Baumann, and was the mother of four children who survive her, Dr. John (Marcelline) Baumann, Mary (Joseph) Pesaresi, Michael (Theresa) Baumann, Esq., and James (Patricia) Baumann. Award-winning actor was TV’s ‘Nero Wolfe’


Maury Chaykin, 61, a veteran


supporting actor who played the title role in the Arts and Enter- tainment cable network series “A Nero Wolfe Mystery” in the early 2000s, died July 27 at a hospital in Toronto. No immediate cause of death was reported, but he had kidney problems. Mr. Chaykin had roles in “Dances With Wolves,” “The Post- man,” “Owning Mahowny,” “Mys- tery, Alaska,” “A Life Less Ordi- nary” and “The Adjuster.” He has also been in the television shows “CSI,” “Boston Legal” and the HBO series “Entourage.” His role in “Whale Music,” a Ca- nadian film, earned him a Genie (the Canadian equivalent of the Oscars) for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in 1994. He also picked up Geminis (the Canadian equivalent of the Emmy Awards) for guest spots on the Canadian TV series “La Femme Nikita” in 1998 and “At the Hotel” in 2006.

New York City’s sprawling public school system as chancellor from 1984 to 1987, died July 24 at a hos- pital in Manhasset, N.Y., a week after suffering a cerebral hemor- rhage. He was born in East Harlem


and graduated from the City Col- lege of New York in 1953. While teaching in New York schools, he received a master’s degree in His- panic literature from Columbia University in 1965 and a master’s degree in education from Hunter College in 1967. He then spent 10 years as assis- tant principal for foreign lan- guages at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens and head- ed the New York City division of high schools before becoming chancellor.


Carl Gordon CHARACTER ACTOR


Carl Gordon, 78, a character ac- tor of stage and TV best known for playing the family patriarch on the Fox sitcom “Roc,” died July 20 at his home in Jetersville, Va., west of Richmond. He had non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the New York Times reported. “Roc,” about a working-class black family in Baltimore, aired from 1991 to 1994 and starred Charles S. Dutton as a garbage man. Mr. Gordon played his iras- cible father, Andrew, who was not shy about sharing his opinions on race. Rufus Carl Gordon Jr. was born


in Goochland, Va., northwest of Richmond, and raised in Brook- lyn. After Air Force service, he held a series of menial jobs and was twice divorced before enroll- ing in an acting workshop that changed the direction of his life. In addition to TV work, he ap- peared on Broadway in 1990 as Uncle Doaker in August Wilson’s play “The Piano Lesson” and in the 1995 TV adaptation. — From Staff and Wire Reports

Born on July 29, 1942 at Alexandria,VA, he was a son of Lillian Virginia Dove Cooper of Palm Harbor, FL and the late Bruce Randolph Cooper.


Mr. Cooper was a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service with 38 years of service in Alexandria, VA. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Westernport, MD, the National Letter Carriers Association and the AFL-CIO.


Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 43 years, Karen K. Chidester Cooper; one son, Randy Cooper and wife Becky of Keyser; two grandchildren, Jeremiah Robert Cooper and Jordan Olivia Faith Cooper and a sister, Betty Jane Davis of Palm Harbor.

Marcus was born in Ft. McClellan, AL on May 19, 1966. He graduated in 1984 from Hayfield High School in Alexandria, VA. He received BA’s in Aquatic Biology and Environmental Studies from the Univ. of California, Santa Barbara. He also received an Associates Degree from Santa Barbara Community College in Commercial and Recreational Diving. Marcus was a litigation paralegal at Townsend, Townsend & Crew in Palo Alto.

JAMESWMURRAY James William Murray, 73, of Hay- market, died Monday, July 26, 2010. He was born in Dallas, Texas on April 29, 1937 to the late, Robert and Georgie Murray. At 6 months old he came to Richmond


where he lived until leaving to attend college. In 1959, he graduated from Virginia Tech and married his beloved wife, Page Elliott. Together they moved to Pittsburgh where he went to work for US Steel. In February of 1962, he came to work for Atlantic Research/Aerojet, where he worked for over 48 years until retiring in July 2010. He received a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from George Washington University in 1966. Survivors include his loving wife, Page E. Murray; three sons, William P. Murray, Grice E. Murray and John H. Murray; siblings, Barbara Cochran and Robert L. Murray; six grandchildren, Gray, Jack, Max, Caroline, Page and Katherine and numer- ous other wonderful friends, especially Sydney Cohen, who devoted so much of his time in such a difficult situation. Funeral services will 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 29 at the Grace Episcopal Church, 6507 Main Street, The Plains, VA 20198, with a visitation and reception to follow. Graveside services will be 12 p.m. on Friday, July 30 at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Found and Sons Lee Funeral Chapel.
