Whilst upstairs an array of glassware lines one side and opposite amultitude of brightly coloured picnic ware is displayed once again on floor to ceiling shelving and creates a striking rainbow effect. Coffeemachines, toasters and foodmixers are naturally, nicely presented on further wooden box effect units lining the walls of the ground floor and a large counter is to the left and back of the stairs. The basement forms aMecca of essentials, frompeelers to grinders and pinnies to garbage cans, this is amuch lower priced domain withmuch higher stock densities.
With four floors offering 7,500 sq ft of retail space, including a top floor café soon to be opened, there’s a lot of kitchenware on sale. It’s a big store with plenty of space to think and shop and it’s worth just taking amoment to truly digest this fact. As hundreds of retail businesses pack up and leave the high street only to be replaced generally by a formof staid financial institution, charity shop, or decidedly cut price grocer (in Hexhamwe now have a Lidl whereWoolworth’s once stood!), here is a store doing the complete reverse and obviously growing fromstrength to strength. And, it’s a real gem, great architecture, great design, great product and a great concept.
Mint Velvet Back on the road again we head further into the depths of Sussex to yet another affluent country style town that is actually a Cathedral city full of history and charm. Chichester is a lovely relaxed place to shop and it’s fairly difficult to tell the chain stores fromthe independents in this high street, because themajority of the stores have retained their ornate facades and internal character.
Mint Velvet is no exception here and at first, second, third, or even fourth visit you’d be forgiven for thinking that this was a ‘one-off’, an independent. It is quite a quirky store in design and presentation and has all the usual
