Charles Steward Jr., USN-Ret., who cochairs the chapter’s scholarship program with Brig. Gen. Jeremiah Brophy Jr., USA-Ret. “Most members contribute annu-
ally to the scholarship fund,” Steward says. “We also get a lot of donations from members of the community who want to do something to support the military and military children.”
Council funding for designated scholarships MOAA chapters in Illinois host yearly fundraisers to benefit the MOAA Scholarship Fund. Funds accumulated by individual chap- ters are combined and used to es- tablish designated scholarships in the council’s name. By drawing on its collective strength, the Illinois Council of Chapters has been able to establish four designated scholar- ships to date. “We have small chapters with
only 50 or 60 members that con- tribute $1,000 on a regular basis,” says Col. John Raschke, USA-Ret., the council’s scholarship chair. “They’re dedicated.” According to Col. Aaron Wolff
Jr., USA-Ret., treasurer and scholar- ship chair for the W. Suburban Chi- cago Chapter, splitting the burden among the state’s chapters provides the flexibility needed to make the program work. “The scholarship program is close
to our hearts,” says Wolff. “It’s given us a way to pay back our military dads and moms for all the sacrifices they have made for our country.” Visit MOAA’s Web Base at www

The event provided more than 800 home- less veterans with clothing, showers, haircuts, medical care, housing and employment assistance, and more. The chapter also contributed $500
