rapidfire Spouses Get Social

MOAA held its annual Spouse Symposium May 13 in Virginia Beach, Va. Its theme was “Spouse Solutions Summit: Making the Connection.”

Monique Rizer, deputy director of spouse programs

This year, the symposium went live from Virginia Beach. For the fi rst time, we included spouses from across the country by taking questions from Twit- ter (marking tweets with #moaaspouse10) and broadcasting the event on MOAA’s Web Base. Check out the archives at www .moaa.org/livestream.

We held a lively discus- sion during the “Social Media in the Military”

panel. My favorite part of the panel was about how much more of a voice spouses have when we connect virtually. For example, a Facebook page was created after the Military Spouse Ca- reer Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) program shutdown, and more than 2,700 fans have gath- ered to advocate for its reinstatement. Panelists urged senior leaders to use social

media to be more accessible. Adm. Mike Mullen, USN, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his wife both are active on Twitter. There are more than 300 offi cial DoD Twitter accounts and more than 680 Facebook pages. The list is at www .facebook.com/moaaspouse under Links. MOAA CFP former Army Capt. Phil Dyer dis-

cussed the Post-9/11 GI Bill, MyCAA, and the Fed- eral Military Spouse Hiring Authority. (Visit www .moaa.org/welcomespouse for more resources.) We ended the panel with the SpouseBUZZ ladies who made us laugh, think — and cry, with laugh- ter.
