Constitution for that purpose are certainly against desecration of the flag but believe that the mild threat does not warrant an action [compa- rable to] passing the Bill of Rights or ending slavery. Anyone who burns our flag in public violates several existing laws in any American com- munity — illegal fire, public nuisance, inciting to riot, etcetera. What ad- ditional punishment for breaking existing laws would a constitutional amendment bring? Besides punish- ment under the law, the flag burner could, and probably would, be cursed and have nasty letters written about him by witnesses exercising our con- stitutional right of free speech. —Lt.
