Campfire Canoeroots iPad App

Is there going to be an iPad app for your magazine?

JODY KIDD Email

Yes, you can now read Canoeroots on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. “We’re one of the first few magazines to be in the Apps Store and the first paddling mag for sure,” says Canoeroots Founder and Publisher Scott MacGregor. “I wasn’t born when they invented printing presses, but I’m here now.” Download the free app at the App Store, then read Canoeroots for only $2.99 per issue. —Eds.

Canoe Poling

In the article, “Stand Up and Be Counted” (Tumpline, Early Summer 2010, www.cano- erootsmag.com/canoerootsmag_earlysum- mer10) the author mentioned how standing up in a canoe is not new and how anglers and hunters in the southern bayous have been pol- ing for a long time. I would like to expand on his poling reference

by saying that canoe poling has a historical link here in Canada as well. Anglers and hunters as well as loggers in New Brunswick and eastern Quebec depended on the skill of polers to get upriver to the best salmon pools and to bring equipment to the lumber camps. Polers will never be a part of today’s econo-

my as they were up until the middle of the last century, but the skill is being kept alive right here in Canada.

I want to thank the entire Canoeroots staff and your team of instructors for a superb Canadian Canoe Symposium on May 14–16, 2010. I tried new things I had only heard about, tried things I had always wanted to try and learned new things that I had never even thought of. The instructors were motivating, friendly and fun to be with. And the Reel Paddling Film Festival film, Dougie Down the Pet from This is Canoe- ing was inspiring. I’m sure it will motivate many more young people to embark on similar jour- neys with their families. I hope to see you at next year’s symposium.

Dog Paddling

Thank you for featuring the dog paddling article, “Ruffin’ It” (Early Summer, www.cano- erootsmag.com/canoerootsmag_earlysum- mer10). Canoe trips wouldn’t be the same without our eight-year-old husky, Nikita. Kevin Callan’s tips are definitely helpful, but I would add one more: make sure to check your campsite for poison ivy before letting your dog off-leash.

Loved the segment with dog gear, but I was very disappointed that you missed a local Canadian company, Hooligan Gear, and their Hooligan Hound products. These days, times are hard and I think supporting Canadian companies and the great gear that comes from our country isn’t too much to ask for. JOHN WALLACE Email

Duct Tape Investigation

I looked into the Polyken tape information list- ed in the “Ultimate Repair Kit” (Early Summer, www.canoerootsmag.com/canoeroots_ear- lysummer10) and found the following: Cova- lence Adhesives is a subsidiary of Berry Plastics in Franklin, MA. The specific information is list- ed under Polyken 253, if you look at their on- line information page. Hope this helps anyone else looking for this product. 1-800-343-7875, www.berryplastics.com.
