EXPLORING THE OUTER LIMITS The PMW-EX1R proved its durability and toughness to Richard Hollingworth on an expedition to the Antarctic

Polar Girls is the working title of an hour long documentary about an Antarctic expedition, which last year saw eight women from the Commonwealth brave blizzards, crevasses and temperatures below-30ºCas they traversed over 900 kilometresofAntarcticatotheGeographicSouthPole. The four week expedition was shot by cameraman

Robert Hollingworth on the PMW-EX1R. Its combinationof size, weight, imagequalityandfile-based operation made it the ideal camera for the job, says Hollingworth. “When you are wearing four layers of gloves and are being constantly hammered by thewind, just standing up on skis is hard enough. You quickly realise that you couldn’t cope with anything bigger – it would be too hard to handle.” Hollingworth recalls how oncea120knotwindblewhimandtheEX1Roveronto the ice. Kept outside in a polar jacket to avoid condensation inside the tents, it was not until

Hollingworth took the jacket off after the trip that he noticedthat thecamerashadacrackrunningthelength of thecase. “I couldseethecircuitboards, but theEX1R kept going, which proves they are tough cameras. Lots of kit would crack under that sort of treatment.” Hollingworth made use of the EX1R’s ability to do

slow motion and timelapse work, recording images to 8GBand32GBSxSPromemory cards. Equippedwith four hard discs, he downloaded rushes daily to create multiple backups. “One of the advantages of tapeless is you are forced to duplicate your data so you are covered for hard drive failure, which at -20ºC is a significant problem.” Overall he describes the quality of theHDimage as

“staggering” for such a small camera. “My reaction was ‘awesome’ and ‘wow’ rather than thinking to myself ‘I wish I had a bigger camera’.”
