Novelty espadrilles Originating from the Pyrenees, the espadrille rose to prominence during the late 1960’s thanks to the influence of Yves Saint Laurent, who commissioned the style with a wedge heel, initiating its ascent to mass-market footwear. Dominating the subsequent decade the espadrille recalls the homespun crafts movement of the seventies, the use of natural straw exuding a simplistic, rustic appeal. Now this perennial Summer staple is reinterpreted in numerous permutations that reject all perceived connotations.

Reapropriated into double heeled styles, replete with floral embellishments, by Antonio Marras, or adorned with bling-tastic silver detailing at Christian Louboutin, the espadrille continues its evolution. Natural woven uppers, contrast against more chunky platform weaves representing a more conventional direction, yet retaining a fashion forward aesthetic.

Colour: A light summery palette that focuses on feminine pastels of ocean wave blues and flushed skin tones is grounded with natural tan and warm whites perfect for spring summer 2011 Espadrilles. Highlights of indigenous indigo and vibrant watermelon provide the sparks for trims and lining colour options.

Personifying a girly summer ethos, a flushed skin pink is edged with white canvas piping, the flirty peep-toe and sling back style emphasizing the conceit.

For a more sophisticated take on the style, fuse white leather uppers with indigenous indigo details with a leather wedge heel. Hint at a more relaxed style through the application of a subtle espadrille trim.

Taking its style cues from retro inspired shapes, the espadrille/pump hybrid features canvas uppers in a vibrant indigenous indigo. A slightly rounded sole, and the application of a blocky heel, creates a unique silhouette.

A soft leather knots and twists across the foot, the straps extending across the platforms. The dramatic watermelon red color palette lends a somewhat glamorous edge to the espadrille, and contrasts sharply with the rope detailing on the wedge heel.

A pop of color on a buckle provides a striking accent against natural tan leather, culminating in a simple, unadorned aesthetic that references the archetypal style.

Characterized by a molded sole shape, the espadrille is updated with a pale witch doctor blue upper that cuffs around the ankle. A coordinating strap across the toes completes the style.
