Sensible sandals If further proof of the continuing demise of the towering ‘it’ shoe were necessary, you need look no further than the Spring Summer 2010 catwalks. Exploring a need for a pared down minimalism better suited to the lingering economic stance, orthopaedic austerity reigns supreme. Characterized by simple details, from a

well placed buckle to stitch down construction, the sensible sandal is refreshingly unassuming. Reflecting the organic, simplistic qualities prevalent at Celine and Chloe, natural dyed leathers come with raw edges and plain straps, the stark graphic shapes expressing a rejection unnecessary adornment.

For women, Margaret Howell’s criss-cross leather options come with the flattest of wooden soles, whilst Marni’s relaxed color blocked straps are paired with folded down socks. The look manifests itself in mens footwear as sleek woven straps are juxtaposed with natural finishes, as seen at Dries Van Noten, Hermes two-strap offing hints at luxury.

Adhering to a basic color palette that never strays too far from a black, tan and white maxim, reinforces the underlying conceit, emphasizing the practical possibilities of this very proper sensibility.

Colour: For spring summer 2011 take inspiration from nature and undyed vegetable leather colours. The minimal palette that centres on a base of earthy blacks and darkest cocoa bean browns is lightened with unbleached cream and natural hemp tones.

Mens Juxtaposing a cocoa bean brown plain leather strap with a plaited leather weave adds interest to the simplest of ideals, whilst promoting a masculine sensibility.

Mens Balancing a chunkier ankle strap cocoa bean brown is complemented by a dramatic black earth tone sole, replete with contrasting Kenyan tan stitching.

Mens An understated translation of the classic flip-flop, realized in blue black with a black earth sole, the color reiterated through coordinating stitching. A fluid asymmetric shape concludes in a classic thong toe post design.

Womens A simplified t-bar shape extends to a high ankle fastening, leaving the back of the foot exposed, emphasizing the pared down minimalism that characterizes this trend.

Womens Fastening with an unbleached leather buckle strap around the ankle, two separate straps intersect above the toe. Pair with a natural tan sole to reinforce the conceit.

Womens Contrast varying strap sizes in multiple colors with a sturdy buckle and a slightly thicker sole. This style has the potential to be adapted for both men and women.
