Ride Profiles
www.parkworld-online.com SUPER STAR FLYER
The Star Flyer is a simple but effective ride that stops park-goers in their tracks thanks to its sheer height. The largest version yet has just opened at the Prater in Vienna, Austria
Towering over everything else in this famous park - including two Ferris Wheels and a tower ride - this mammoth 117-metre construction is called simply Praterturm (Prater Tower). Its classic, early 20th Century theming is in keeping with the ongoing “Prater Renaissance” regeneration programme. The ride was supplied by Funtime, which
already operates a number of extreme attractions in the park. Indeed, it was the original 72-metre Star Flyer opened at the Prater in 2003 that acted as a showpiece for the firm when the European attractions industry descended on Vienna for the EAS trade show in 2004/5. This and the rides that have appeared at the Munich Oktoberfest, generating long queues, are thought to have been powerful selling tools for Funtime. Although some describe the ride experience as
“boring” there is no doubting the Star Flyer's headline grabbing potential, which should make it popular with park owners, event operators and the general public for years to come. There's still one question we need answering, however: Why has no one done it before?
