The European Social Fund (ESF)
The European Social Fund (ESF) is pleased to sponsor Adult Learners’ Week, and congratulates this year’s winners and encourages many more people to follow their inspiring examples by engaging in learning and developing their potential.
ESF is a European Union initiative that helps people who are unemployed or at a disadvantage in the labour market to find work and develop their skills.
ESF also trains people in work so that they have the skills that businesses need to compete in a global economy.
In England, in 2007-2013, the ESF is investing £2.5 billion of ESF money to develop skills and extend employment opportunities.
Thanks to ESF support, many more people now have basic skills and qualifications, and are in sustainable employment. People like this year’s West Midlands ESF winner – Matthew.
You can read his inspiring story in this booklet. His story shows what can be achieved when people have the motivation to learn and can access learning opportunities.
The European Structural Funds Programs are targeted at regenerating some of the most challenged urban and rural areas of the West Midlands, and providing support for reskilling and retraining its workforce.
