Nolan

Prof John

Diabetes & Metabolism

Prof Nolan is studying insulin resistance, a key cause of Type 2 diabetes. He has recently shown that young patients with Type 2 diabetes respond poorly to exercise because of abnormal functioning of muscle mitochondria. His team is studying how diet, exercise and new drugs can ‘unlock’ this problem. His aim is to develop more effective treatments and to prevent diabetes.

Bowie

Prof Andrew

Prof Bowie’s research group is exploring how viruses are detected by human cells, and how viruses fi ght back to try to escape detection. This work contributes to understanding the immune response to viral human diseases.

Molloy

Dr Anne

Pregnancy & Birth Defects

Dr Molloy’s research aims to discover how nutrients such as folic acid and vitamin B12 interact with the genetic profi le of an individual and why these gene- nutrient interactions can infl uence a mother’s risk during pregnancy of having a baby with certain forms of severe birth defect such as spina bifi da and anencephaly.

Kenny

Prof Rose Anne

Rapid demographic changes create both a challenge and an opportunity for the research to contribute to understanding of the ageing process to facilitate healthy and happy extended life span.

Ageing Viral Defence

O’Neill

Prof Luke

Infl ammation & Immunology

Prof O’Neill’s research concerns the role our innate immune system plays in driving infl ammatory and infectious diseases. He has discovered key components of the innate immune system which, if targeted, might give rise to new treatments for diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, septic shock and Type II diabetes, and also malaria and TB.

Fallon

Prof Padraic

People in Ireland have some of the highest incidence of a number of diseases, for example eczema and asthma. Prof Fallon identifi ed new cells or processes that can cause or prevent infl ammation that can lead to such diseases.

Zisterer

Dr Daniela

Cancer Biology

Dr Zisterer recently identifi ed a novel series of PBOX compounds that can induce apoptotic cell death in human cancerous cells. These drugs work by disrupting the microtubules which are very important for cell structure and cell division. These drugs have the potential for treatment of drug-resistant cancers.

Meegan

Prof Mary J

Prof Meegan’s research is focussed on the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel therapeutic agents suitable for development as drugs for the treatment of breast cancer, particularly for multidrug resistant types.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Infl ammatory Diseases

Keane

Prof Joseph

Lung Cancer & TB

Prof Keane’s research efforts are focussed on lung disease and TB. If lung cancer is caught early, lives can be saved. His team has been involved in developing a test at bronchoscopy that allows lung cancer detection with high accuracy. In TB research his focus is on the immune responses to the disease.

Reilly

Prof Richard

Prof Reilly’s research focuses on understanding how the brain processes information using brain imaging methods such as EEG and fMRI to help in neurological diagnosis, monitoring and rehabilitation.

Senge

Prof Mathias

Prof Senge’s group works on photodynamic cancer therapy. This is a simple noninvasive outpatient method that uses a combination of light and compounds related to blood pigments and chlorophyll to treat cancer without side effects.

O’Morain

Prof Colm

Prof O’Morain’s group has been involved in Helicobacter pylori and was the fi rst to show that eradication leads to a permanent cure of duodenal ulcer. His team has been exploring gastric cancer and bowel disease.
