The Role of the University
The great aim of education is not knowledge but
action.” Herbert Spencer (1820 – 1903)
The proper role for a university in society is often debated. While we hold on to our core mission of finding new knowledge, and passing it to future generations, this can seem rather abstract for many. Perhaps it might be best to understand this by reflecting on our outputs, our effects on the world, and how we are making it a better place?
What, as a starting question, do we want for our children? What should the university’s educational mission be in helping form young minds? In simple terms we want our children to be, as the saying goes, “healthy, wealthy and wise”, in addition we would like them to have confidence in their talents, be able to build relationships and play a productive role in their society.
And our research mission, what should that be? From discovering new knowledge and insights, translating these into practical applications for a better society, to fuelling future innovation and entrepreneurship, we believe Trinity is playing a vital role in this nation’s economic and cultural future.
The following pages group our research, teaching and engagement with society activities under five broad headings – bringing to life the business of a university, how this great College with its unique traditions is, today, contributing to our lives, economically, socially and creatively. You will learn how Trinity’s research and teaching is:
Health
Wealth
helping us live longer and more productive lives
adding value to our economy, playing a central role in Ireland’s innovation journey
Wisdom
expanding our horizons and deepening our understanding of the human condition
Confidence
Participation
contributing to Ireland’s role as a responsible global citizen supporting active citizenship
From educating one person, to launching a major research programme, all these activities need your support.
You will find these initiatives, these adventures in discovery, are addressing real needs and opportunities in the world today. Trinity College Dublin is making a major contribution to the City of Dublin, to Ireland and across the globe. We now ask all our alumni and friends to join the growing numbers of people who support this great university in its quest to change the world. None of the projects in this report would have happened without the active support of so many who have volunteered, who have given us advice, who have donated to the Annual Fund. You have Trinity’s thanks!
