SCIENCE GALLERY

Igniting creativity and discovery where science and art collide

Science Gallery is a dynamic exploration of the interface between science, technology and culture in a sociable environment. Young adults, 15 years and over, are engaged through an active programme of exhibitions, public experiments and events to help them discover, express and pursue their passion for science. Since its opening in February 2008, there

have been over 500,000 visitors. In 2009 there were four major exhibitions, two micro-shows and over 80 related events. The Gallery is working towards being the central interface engaging the public with science when Dublin is the European City of Science in 2012. Science Gallery has developed a ‘Science and Technology in Society’ course for students in arts, humanities and science disciplines to explore science’s interaction with society through practical examples and project work culminating in a year-end public exhibit.

Science Gallery is supported by

significant private funders – Dell, Google, ICON, PACCAR, Ulster Bank, University of Dublin Fund, Wellcome Trust, media partners The Irish Times – and Government funding from the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, Science Foundation Ireland and Discover Science and Engineering.

INFECTIOUS: STAY AWAY

Exploring contagion through science and art

Over 47,000 people ignored the warning to “Stay Away” and came to explore the INFECTIOUS exhibition which investigated mechanisms of contagion and strategies of containment through science and art. Visitors had the opportunity to extract their own DNA and have it analysed. This ‘Lab-in-the-Gallery’ provided some previously ungathered data and has contributed significantly to researchers’ scientific database and publishable research.

The ‘Lab-in-the Gallery’ concept has

been extended to other exhibitions, such as Pay Attention!, and has accelerated by orders of magnitude researchers ability to experiment with the public and gather scientifically relevant data – in one case the equivalent of 20 Ph.D. theses.

INFECTIOUS was curated by

the Science Gallery team in association with Professor Luke O’Neill and Professor Cliona O’Farrelly and was made possible in part by the generous support of The Wellcome Trust.

In a short space of time the Science Gallery has become a hub of creativity, stimulating interest, excitement and debate in science with the general public. It has established a strong international reputation for innovative programming and is attracting excellent scientists to showcase their work in an engaging, accessible

and exciting way.” Ben Stewart, Grants Manager, Wellcome Trust
