- sip feeds
Having a ‘one size fits all’ policy of using just one sip feed may not mean totally cost effective prescribing . . .
volume, high energy sip feed may be a better choice, even though the latter product may not be nutritionally complete. Equally, if a patient dislikes sweet or milky drinks, prescrip- tion of a milkshake style sip feed as the standard prescribed product is also unlikely to be completely cost effective. Wasted sip feeds have a big cost implication for the NHS as under current guidance most areas of the country are unable to re-use sip feeds which have been dispensed, even if they remain unopened. Unused sip feeds even if returned to a phar- macy generally have to be destroyed rather than re-used. Photo (right) shows waste supplements returned to a pharmacy by one small care home - excluding the thickener, the supplements pictured are worth £423.53. For this reason a number of community trusts around the country employ dietitians to work within medicines manage- ment teams looking at, among other things, appropriate pre- scribing of sip feeds. Supported by the NICE recommenda- tions above and the need to reduce costs, it is likely that more community trusts around the country will follow suit and, as dietitians, we need to work with them to ensure the best care for our patients and ensure cost effective prescrib- ing of sip feeds by all.
