Prescribable foods tend to have a shorter shelf life, therefore it is important to consider quantities carefully. Manufacturers of the specialist gluten-free products will offer samples prior for patients to try prior to prescription requests.

It is important too, to remember that people with coeliac disease in England, N Ireland and Scotland do have to pay for prescription gluten-free products unless exempt for another reason (income, age, medical condition etc). Prescriptions in Wales are free of charge. Some patients may wish to consider purchasing a Prepayment certificates (PPC) for their prescrip- tion products particularly if they are requesting a number of items on a regular basis.
