A
ttitude has a huge influence
over our decision-making. Wheth- er we are trusting or dubious,
optimistic or pessimistic determines the factors we judge to be important. A good example is buying a car. We
have different attitudes when considering a new car than we do looking at used cars. With new cars, we are distracted by the newness — the shiny and fresh intrigue of that new-car smell. With used cars, we notice all the
scratches and road dings and that strange odor from the air conditioner. With used cars, we wonder why the owner wants to sell. Is he or she hiding
something that is wrong with the car? We are, in a word, skeptical. Buying a stock is very much like buying
a used car. In virtually all cases (except for initial public offerings), the stock is being sold by someone else. It’s a used stock. So it pays to be just as skeptical when
you are buying a stock as when you are buying a used car. Ask the same questions: “Why does the owner want to sell?” “Is something wrong with this stock?” If you find this advice silly, consider
how you would feel if you knew you were buying the same stock Warren Buffett was selling.

Way,” from the Trevor Romain Co., offers
school-age children help preparing for and deal- ing with all stages of deployment, from pre- deployment to separa- tion to reintegration. In May, the free
DVD was added to a children’s deployment kit distributed through USO centers and Mili- tary OneSource. The kit also contains a stuffed bear named Cuzzie, postcards, a journal, and a set of dog tags inscribed “With You All the Way.”
