Enhance Your Fertility with Acupuncture

by Marlo Toxey, DOM

T

raditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years. But here in

the U.S. and other Western countries, people are just beginning to understand and appreciate the effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It can be diffi cult to compare

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine because there are profound differences. For example, Western medicine often takes a more segmented view of people — your body may be treated as a part rather than one whole, integrated system. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine treats an individual as a whole, with each part depending on, and infl uencing all the other parts. This “whole-body” approach means that the practitioner addresses the root of the problem rather than just the symptoms. As a result of such a treatment strategy, most patients experience an improvement in their specifi c condition and also a better overall sense of health and well being. Most people, when they think of acupuncture treating a health concern, think of pain management. Traditional Chinese Medicine, (TCM), can offer great results treating acute or chronic pain, but did you know that acupuncture is not just for pain? More people are using acupuncture for all of their health concerns, from diabetes, arthritis, allergies, and even fertility issues.

Today there is research to prove that using acupuncture to enhance fertility is providing reason for new optimism in the struggle with this ongoing concern. There are many factors that may make conception diffi cult to achieve, and even after conception, problems may occur bringing the pregnancy to term, which can lead to

frustration and increased stress. TCM can be used alone or in conjunction with Western medicine. A study conducted in 2002 noted that there was an increase in conception rates from 26% to 46% when acupuncture was used with in vitro fertilization or IVF. Also, effectiveness of acupuncture received the day of embryo transfer versus no acupuncture signifi cantly increased pregnancy rates. Acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer improved the outcome of IVF, and researchers concluded that it was safe for women undergoing IVF. Additional studies have proven that acupuncture provides better circulation and increased blood fl ow to the womb, while helping to improve circulation to the ovaries and uterus. It aids ovarian stimulation, improves the thickness of uterine lining, and therefore can help with implantation. Acupuncture is relaxing, which helps to lower your cortisol levels and increase progesterone output, important factors in decreasing your chance of having a miscarriage. It can also improve semen quality, quantity and reduce stress. In conclusion, Traditional Chinese Medicine has a long history assisting fertility in more ways than one. By balancing the mind, body and spirit, patients can improve fertility and sleep, increase energy, decrease the level of daily stress, and increase an overall sense of wellbeing.
