Mr. Van Thompson

r. Thompson is a Project Manager for Skanska USA Buildings’ New York office. With over 24 years of experience in the construction field, he has demonstrated his managerial skills on a variety of projects from management of the design process through completion of construction. He has successfully managed the construction of several New York City Agency projects, working closely with the New York School Construction Authority, New York City Economic Development Corporation, New York City Board of Education and the New York Department of Design and Construction. As a Project Manager for Skanska on the NYCSCA Mentor Program, he managed a staff of over 15 professionals whose responsibilities consisted of supervising and mentoring minority and women owned businesses.

His commitment to the development of minority, women and small business owned companies in the construction industry has been instrumental in leading the efforts of Skanska’s seven week Construction Management Building Blocks training program since 2007. Two sessions of the Building Blocks program were presented at Bronx Community College. Students received training in marketing, estimating, project startup and closeout, scheduling accounting, legal process, human resources, safety and bonding. They were also provided with basic introduction to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification process and to sustainable development, construction management techniques, and environmental health and safety. More than sixty small contractors completed the eight week program which gave them the skills to become bidders on contracts with major construction companies.

Mr. Thompson is currently part of a management team managing a $1.2 billion, five-year renovation master plan project in New York City. Closely involved in both the industry and within the community, he sits on Skanska’s National Diversity Council and champions the local Metro New York Regions Diversity Council. He is also an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown, New Jersey where he sits on the Building Committee for a $35 million new construction project scheduled to begin in 2011.

He holds a degree in Engineering/Architectural Technology from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is a certified Sub Code official for the State of New Jersey and a license Site Safety Manager for the State of New York. An avid bowler and sports fan, Mr. Thompson born and raised in Newark, New Jersey now resides in Ledgewood, New Jersey where he lives with his wife of 23 years Terry. They have two children, Tory 21 and Tia 16.
