Bronx Community College Foundation Chairman

Our theme this year is “Building On A Dream.” Bronx Community College invites students to dream their dreams and to visualize rewarding futures. BCC nurtures those dreams and challenges students to study and act so that their dreams can be accomplished. The BCC Foundation raises funds to assist the College in this worthy mission that transforms the lives of students each and every day.

It has been my privilege to be associated with the Foundation for over six years. I have personally witnessed the progress undertaken with the leadership of Dr. Carolyn Williams as well as the excitement about the future that permeates the campus. Our awardees tonight reflect BCC’s proud history, its continuing commitment to community service, and its optimistic view towards the future.

CUNY’s executive vice chancellor and chief operating officer, Allan H. Dobrin is responsible for providing the administrative infrastructure and the technological backbone that makes all things possible at CUNY. His visionary introduction of the student technology fee has provided equitable access to leading edge technology for all students.

Kenneth Olden, the founding dean of the CUNY School of Public Health is a world renowned cell biologist and biochemist. His work in cancer research has been internationally celebrated. We are honored that he will be part of the ongoing legacy of Professor Robert L. Clarke.

Beverly Spitzer and Howard Stein have been legendary supporters of Bronx Community College and its students for many years. As a member of the BCC Foundation Board, Howard has been my anchor during all my years of service. Beverly and Howard embody philosophy of “family first,” and we are indeed fortunate to be part of their extended family.

Van Thompson brought his expertise in project management and his commitment to minority and women owned businesses to BCC with the implementation of Skanska’s Building Blocks training program. This program opened a world of opportunities in construction management for over 60 small Bronx contractors. BCC is happy to have partnered with Skanska in such a significant endeavor.

Lastly, I must thank all of you here for supporting the vital work of Bronx Community College. Your financial and personal contributions make it possible for all of our students to dare to dream those dreams that will be the future of our nation, our world, and our planet.
