TOMORROW’S CLEANING APRIL 10

‘Anti-Virus Machine’ will wipe out Casino bacteria

Casino ‘high rollers’ and wealthy patrons of luxury hotels around the world could soon be protected by a new air purifier that kills viruses and bacteria in minutes, according to its British inventors.

Tri-Air Developments is licensing the technology to BA Holdings, which has marketed ‘fragrance delivery’ systems to the premium leisure sector since 2004.

The casino industry, valued at $63billion annually worldwide, is vulnerable to the threat of viruses such as H5N1. Tests by the UK’s independent Health Protection Agency have confirmed the effectiveness of the Tri-Air purification system in eliminating both airborne and surface bacteria and viruses: analysis shows a 99.999% kill rate with airborne test Staphylococcus, of the same genus as MRSA, in less than two minutes.

BA Holdings Ltd is now marketing the technology as a wall-mounted serviced unit,

SCA in the world’s most ethical list for a third time

The company is one of only four organisations in the forestry, paper and packaging sector to be named in this year’s list. The others were Stora Enso, International Paper and Weyerhaeuser.

The World’s Most Ethical Companies listing is drawn up each year by the Ethisphere Institute in New York. News of SCA’s success comes within months of the company’s sixth consecutive appearance in the Global 100

world’s most sustainable corporations listing.

The Ethisphere Institute makes its judgement based on various criteria such as

sustainability track record, the way a company responds to the community and how it audits its supply chain. Companies that make the list are those that demonstrate outstanding ethics

First “Pay-as-you-throw” scheme launched by Local Council

The first pay-as-you-throw rubbish scheme is set to be launched, Bristol City Council have announced.

Under the plans, binmen will weigh each household’s weekly rubbish with the council reimbursing the least wasteful homes with money or vouchers to spend in local shops, depending on how much they manage to reduce their waste.

Under the local authority’s plans, residents of 2,362 homes in the city will be invited to take part in the six-month pilot, with town hall officials stating the scheme is designed to encourage green behavior.

The volunteers will be given a microchipped wheelie bin so the amount they throw out can be weighed and recorded, with the amount of waste per resident calculated.

Steve Wright, Chairman of the British Cleaning Council, said: ‘Britain lags behind the rest of Europe in terms of the amount we recycle and this needs to be addressed. Schemes like this one will help residents to become more conscious of what they are throwing away, helping them reduce waste. We support rewards within voluntary schemes to assist people as they develop greener habits, as part of a wider strategy of education and encouragement to increase the amount we recycle’.

No set number of companies make the list each year, though this year there are 100 World’s Most Ethical Companies.
