BOAT OWNERSHIP
Still Confused on Dinghy Registration
I need to ask a question coming from reading the article
on page 37 of the Feb 2010 issue of 48° North, “Required
Display of Registration Numbers on Dinghies,” by Bob
Hargreaves. I have a US Coast Guard documented sailboat
and after reading the article I understood that Washington
State now assigns WN registration numbers to USCG
documented vessels, and even though we do not display
registration numbers, we use that number for our tender?
We also charter the boat out for bareboat use in the
San Juans so we have a Dept. of Revenue business license.
The DOL folks I talked to today thought I was exempt and

when I showed them my business license, gave up and told
me to call the Revenue folks. I did and they said they have
nothing to do with registration numbers for boats.
So, the article seems to have blurred things a bit more
for dinghies and tenders of documented boats. Any chance
Mr. Hargreaves could be contacted to see if this is really
what he meant?
I’m also contacting the folks who processed the
