3D broadcasting in focus
Brave new world
As this issue heads for the presses two significant
announcements have hit the news regarding the future of
broadcasting and cinema, clear indications of what’s in store for
the viewing public. And it’s all in 3D.
Firstly, James Cameron’s epic 3D movie, Avatar, has just
eclipsed everything that went before and become the highest
grossing film ever at box offices across the globe. It’s a fabulous
spectacle, and sets a new standard by which all future movies
will be judged. Just as SD looks poor after watching HD
programming, ‘standard’ movies will suffer the same fate after
Avatar.
Secondly, in the UK at least, Sky has announced that it is
screening a live Premier League football match (between
Arsenal and Manchester United) in nine pubs around the country
- in 3D. In April this year Sky will launch its 3D channel to
hundreds of other pubs throughout the UK. Following that, later
in the year Sky 3D will be made available to all Sky+HD
customers, with a broad range of content on offer. Movies and
sports will be at the forefront of the initial offer - which will be
made available at no extra cost to subscribers with Sky+HD
boxes. This free, initial offer, however, might well be replaced by
an additional subscription once the service gathers speed.
Speaking to BBC News, Gerry O’Sullivan, Sky’s director of
strategic product development, said: “People have already
embraced 3D cinema and because Sky’s 3D service uses the
same kind of technology, we’re confident there will be a
demand for sport, movies, concerts and drama in 3D.”
And he’s probably right. With 3D-ready TVs in the shops this
year, this technology will soon be taking its place in living rooms
around the world.
Now where did I put my 3D glasses...?
