Treatment for Enlarged Prostate
If watchful waiting and medicines haven’t worked, your doctor may suggest the following:
Nonsurgical procedures—These include treatments that use heat to destroy extra prostate tissue. They shrink your prostate and help open up your urethra.
Surgical procedures—These treatments remove the enlarged part of your prostate to make it smaller. If your symptoms are putting your health at risk, your doctor may recommend surgery.
Like medicines, these procedures can have side effects. So ask your doctor about side effects—including sexual side effects— before deciding on a treatment (see p. 9). Go to

Prostate Cancer Screenings
Unless you’ve had your prostate removed, you still have a risk of cancer. Talk to your doctor about setting up a prostate cancer screening plan that’s right for you, depending on your age and other risk factors.
