THE YEAR
Lucas Glover’s route to his victory in the 2009 U.S.

AHEAD Open was one long slog.

Faced with a Bethpage Black course that had been

two-stroke victory over Phil Mickelson (his record fifth

runner-up finish in the Open), a stunningly resurgent

David Duval and 2002 U.S. Amateur champion Ricky

Barnes.
Glover opened with rounds of 69-64-70 and closed
with a 3-over-par 73 that was highlighted by his only
birdie of the day, on No. 16, when he striped a drive
and then hit his 8-iron approach four feet from the hole
and made the crucial putt to give himself a two-stroke
margin.
“I hit the shots that I had to hit in the situation, and
that might be a little more gratifying,” said Glover,
who began the final round a stroke behind Barnes, of
whom much has been expected since his win in the
Amateur—most importantly by Barnes himself.

Tournament record:
“I drove it probably the best I’ve ever driven it in the

first three rounds here,” said Glover. “Not so much

“I don’t know if I have enough energy to do anything
crazy,” he told the press. “And that’s the first time I’ve
contended in a major. And mentally, I was done. I don’t
think I could have thought up a good celebration.”
Why should he? There were plenty of other things to

think about that day.
