Ensuring a safe, secure, and resilient aviation security system demands
a multi-faceted and multi-layered approach that requires the effective
integration of people, processes, and technology that operate within the
airport environment. Despite the substantive contribution of technology
and automated detection systems the Security Officer remains the most
critical element of the security process. As terrorist methodologies evolve
and become more sophisticated, so must the processes required to protect
the travelling public. The security checkpoint is the focal point of the
screening process, and with X-ray technology being the primary screening
tool, ensuring that the Security Officer has the capability to detect potential
threats is obviously of paramount importance. Andrew McClumpha outlines
what computer based training (CBT) offers; identifies some of the beneficial
features of CBT, and discusses issues worth noting when considering the
use of CBT in a training programme.
