B.J. Penn made a return to the
lightweight division after his recent
unsuccessful escapade at welterweight.
Once again the fight was subject of
much discussion, many predicting
that the underdog, Florian, would
be able to control the fight standing
thanks to his excellent Thaiboxing and
significant reach advantage. Whether
the Florian fan’s enthusiasm was tainted

GSP, or his recent training stint with the
welterweight champion, on the night
the lightweight champion was far from
a shot fighter. From the opening bell

his own. In the grappling phases, whether
standing or on the ground, the Hawaiian
was in charge. He stuffed all of Kenny’s
takedown attempts with ease and pushed
him around when he wanted to. After
landing a switch in the third round and
standing back up, Penn finally decided
to take the fight to the ground in the
fourth with a slam from the clinch. Once

best. Starting from half-guard he took
a few elbows from the bottom before

it was a question of time before the result
was decided. Florian did what he could to
escape, giving up his back then turning
back to mount before B.J. was able to
secure the position. But it was all in vain,
Penn took his time, secured the rear
mount, punished Florian with some heel
kicks to the gut then slipped his hand
under the chin and finished with a rear
naked choke.
