• Our health service has moved up 15 places in the Euro Health Consumer Index (EHCI)
since 2006. Ireland was ranked 28th out of 29 European countries but in the recently
published Euro Health Consumer Index Report, our health service is ranked 13th out of 33
other European health services.

• Ninety per cent of HSE staff who responded to an internet survey are in favour of initiatives
to help people in developing countries such as twinning of hospitals and training of health
workers. In addition almost all respondents were in favour of the HSE supporting staff who
would like to volunteer to work overseas, including responding to emergencies.
• The upper weekly recommended alcohol limit for men is 17 standard drinks and for women
11 standard drinks. A standard drink is a half pint of beer, a small glass of wine or a
measure of spirits.
• The HSE is carrying out a National Review of Audiology Services. The Review will examine
the services currently being provided to children and adults nationwide and will inform a

national plan for the service. Submissions to the expert group are invited from members of
the public, other interested stakeholders and/or local advocate groups before year-end.
• Every year in Ireland there are more than 7,000 patients hospitalised with a principal
diagnosis of stroke. In about 80 per cent of cases the stroke is caused by a blood clot
blocking the flow of blood to the brain.
• During the first 16 days of the Swine Flu Vaccination Campaign more than 11,000 pregnant
women were vaccinated.
