and 88’) off the bench to secure the victory. Skonieczny
recorded his fourth shutout of the season against Canisius,
making six saves.
On Senior Day, Marist jumped up on Siena 1-0 in the 37th
minute only to have Siena steamroll the Red Foxes in the
second half. Joe Tavernese tied it two minutes after Marist
scored and five different players scored in a 22-minute span
in the second half. Di Filippo tallied the game-winner and his
team-leading sixth goal of the season, and senior defender
Brian Woodfield converted a PK for his first career goal.
“I was very proud of the way our team stuck together and
battled throughout the season,” Elliott said. “Each player
understood his role and helped the team win.”
Siena clinched the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament
with a double-overtime win at Iona on November 7. Junior
midfielder Anthony Tagliaferri scored all three Siena goals,
his second tied the game in the 89th minute to force over-
time and his third won it. He earned MAAC Offensive Player
of the Week for his performance.
In the regular-season finale, Siena lost to Fairfield 3-0,
snapping its four-game win streak and setting the stage
for a rematch in the MAAC Tournament semifinals five days
later. But an early ejection forced the Saints to play
man-down for the rest of the game, allowing the Stags to
counter-attack at will. Fairfield went on to win 4-0 and
ended Siena’s season.
“It was a disappointing result,” Elliott said. “I think the red
card changed the flow of the game. However, we played
well after the ejection and continued to control the ball and
had some scoring chances. But once they got the second
goal we knew it would be difficult to come back.”
Co-captains Ross Cardinell and Anzevui would be named to
the MAAC All-Tournament Team two days later.
