I load up some black and I start to work on the background while using a
hand shield to protect from overspray and to define the edges of the face.
With the background now completed as well as the shirt, I
then move on to what I call detailing.
With some reduced black I go back to the eyes and start adding paint to
the darker areas, creating more depth. This is a very important step since
it’s the last chance at getting things just the way I want them. I can make
the highlights brighter with the use of an eraser. Eyebrows and eyelashes
are both done free hand with the airbrush by working close to the surface
with no more that 20 PSI with some over reduced black paint. Here to get
my rhythm just right I’ll do some small dagger strokes on a practice sheet
before working the canvas. This way I get to see if my airbrush is in good
working condition and to see if I’m up to the task!! Also the direction of each
dagger stroke is very important. Pay attention to your reference pic.

deciding instead to do the highlights with an X-Acto
blade by scraping the black paint off the canvas.
