Jerrod is a professional artist living in Jackson- for theme parks, museums, restaurants water
ville, Fl. He has drawn or painted since childhood parks, libraries. The airbrush is one of the many
and currently makes a living at it. He has trav- tools that he uses for various projects. He is also
eled all over the United States painting murals a professional illustrator.
Step 1
To start this project I apply a base coat of Borage (a Sherwin Williams color,
purple more or less) over the entire wall where the mural is to be painted. After
determining where the oceans horizon line will be I use a caulk line to snap a
line from the measurements on each side of the wall. Using a piece of white
caulk the land is drawn out going both above the horizon line and below. With
the horizon line and land mass now marked out I apply Keen Blue to the area
that will the ocean.
Step 2
To cover a large area such as the sky in this mural I use an HVLP spray gun.
Starting at the horizon line and working my way up into the sky I apply Eros Pink,
heavy right along the horizon line and progressively lighter as I move up into
the sky. At this point I start laying out the clouds not being concerned to much
about detail at this point. I allow some of the pink to spray lightly down into what
will be the water; this will help provide some depth later.
Step 3
Base coat all of the land areas with Sherwin Williams Tricom Black with the
exception of the water (paint about one to two inches under it). I mix the black
with a black pigment tint and some Flotrol in order to achieve a nice dark and
smooth surface. (Flotrol is a paint conditioner). Back to the HVLP to work on the
clouds avoiding the area where the sun will be located.
Step 4
Using Sherwin Williams Tide Pool, Egyptian Nile and darken Keen Blue I start
filling in the water using dash strokes to represent waves. The dashes should
be kept completely horizontal (your eyes tend to follow the land so don’t let this
happen). Run the dashes off into the blank area between the water and land.
Once this area is cut in with black (in step 7) it will give the illusion that the
water is behind the land.
