Lots of time was spent detailing
these skulls. I think there is some-
where around 50 of them! Once all
the skulls were finished, I removed
the masking covering the design.
I cleaned up any paint build-up
around the edges using a razor
blade, and used a tack-rag to re-
move any dust and over-spray.
The entire panel is painted using Matrix FX Series Candy Concentrate Red with
just a pinch of silver and violet dry pearl. The color is built slowly, until the de-
sired hue is achieved. It is then clear coated using Matrix MS 52 clear. Special
thanks to my buddy Shawn from Karvia Auto Solutions for making time to handle
the candy and clear (got his hands full restoring 2 Corvettes right now). The panel
is sanded with 1500 grit wet paper, and then buffed to a show finish.
That’s all there is to it! What’s great about this technique is the light play created
by the swirl marks in the metal. In the shade or fluorescent light, it appears almost
like crushed velvet. Take it into the sunlight, and look out! The light play creates
an almost holographic look. As you move around the panel, the light from the
swirl marks “jump out” and actually move with you. I hope you enjoy.
