portrait again with my yellows and pinks photo I noticed that the right cheek needed further definition of skin texture, so I began
to bring it back closer to the reference to highlight with my highlight mixture, deepening some of the pore areas of the skin
photo and to soften the highlights. I also and then misting over with my pinks and brown mid-tone mixtures, that I had used

to give the beard a more fuller and more proportions of black and light brown plus 3 drops red and 3 drops deep blue.
natural appearance. I also have gone into
the eyebrows with black to sharpen the
detail of the hair.
Step 12 This is the final stage of the game where all the stops are pulled out. After
taking some needed time away from my airbrushing I came back for a fresh look and
low and behold I found changes to be made. I decided the nose did not look like my ref-
erence photo, so I did some retouching work. First I worked over the bottom and side
edges of the nose with opaque white with multiple thin layers, so that I would not over
saturate the material and destroy the artwork. After the paint was dry I misted over
with my original flesh tones and reshaped the highlights and re-misted with my pinks
and sharpened the shadow areas with my browns to more closely match my refer-
ence photo. I also added a few light highlights to the right side of the nose to sharpen
it up. I also worked on the lips, touching up the highlights and correcting the corners
of the mouth and deepening the shadow on the bottom side of the upper lip to give a
more 3D look. I also filled in more black on the beard at the right side of the mustache
to more closely match the reference photo. Lastly I decided to deepen some of the
shadows around the under sides of the eyes and wrinkles to bring out a 3D affect for
the eye sockets.
This painting has been a true test of my ability’s and I have come away very pleased with the final outcome. I hope this article will
inspire you to push yourself to the limits and past with your ability’s as an artist. The entire painting, from start to finish took a total
of 45 hours and was well worth the time and effort. Do not be afraid to jump right in with both feet because like Don says “ It’s just
paint”. Have a great time airbrushing and paint on.
